5 ways to use wallpaper that you’ve probably never considered

Wallpaper on a single wall is the most common starting point. We have applied this in many spaces, including kids’ bedrooms, to add color and pattern. However, in most of our luxury residential projects at DKOR, we get far more creative with it. Over the years, our team has approached wallpaper ideas for the home in unique ways. Every decision starts with a concept and ends with a tailored space. Here are the creative ways our DKORistas actually use it.

1. Outlined Within Moldings, So It Reads Like Art, Not Decoration

When wallpaper, especially a mural-style or high-pattern design, is framed inside architectural moldings, it stops being a surface treatment and it almost feels like an “art piece.” The frame gives it a beginning and an end; but the moldings do more than frame the wallpaper: their shapes outline the room and accentuate key elements, like decorative lighting, in a way that feels intentional rather than added.

In our 3,820-square-foot luxury condo renovation in Bal Harbour,, we used this approach across multiple rooms, including curved moldings outlined in a guest bedroom. That detail was not purely decorative, it inspired the project’s guiding concept, Cove: a contained, enveloping space drawn from the coastline itself. The same idea repeated throughout the home, so everything felt cohesive.

2. On The Ceiling: To Define The Space, Not Just Decorate It

A ceiling with wallpaper does something an expected white-painted ceiling cannot: it anchors the space. It creates a visual boundary that makes a space feel complete and finished, especially in open layouts where areas share the same volume.

At Pier 66 Fort Lauderdale Bold Residence, every room was designed as its own full experience, the concept was Speakeasy: the feeling of stepping into something hidden and unexpected. The ceiling wallpaper wasn´t an afterthought; it was part of the moment we were building for that room. We applied the same idea at Bal Harbour Condo, where wallpaper on the dining room ceiling gave the space its own identity within an open floor plan shared with two living areas. 

3. As A General Wallcovering, Instead Of Paint

Not every wallpaper decision is about pattern or drama. A textured wallcovering applied across an entire room, what we call a “general,” acts more like paint but delivers something paint cannot: depth and warmth. It is often one of the first decisions we make when building a project budget, because the return in perceived luxury is immediate, and it costs far less than most architectural interventions.

4. Accent And General Together, In The Same Room, With Hierarchy

Using more than one wallpaper in a single space works when there is a clear sense of hierarchy: one leads, one supports. We think of it like planning an outfit. You can pair a bold top with a bold bottom, but most of the time you want one to carry the look while the other completes it. Every pattern, surface, and room had to answer to the same idea. That is what keeps a home from feeling like an accumulation of good choices and makes it feel like one cohesive vision. Anybody can walk into a wallpaper showroom and find something beautiful. The designer’s role is to know exactly where it lives and why.
