Geography doesn’t have to limit designing a home you love. While our interior design firm is based in Miami, we’ve spent over two decades designing luxury homes for clients far beyond Florida, across the U.S. and around the world. And if you’ve followed our work for a while, you may have wondered how we’re able to create such personal, detailed interiors for clients in places like New York, Nevada, Maryland, Mexico, Canadá, and the República Dominicana, without being there full-time.

It’s a fair question. After all, designing a home is deeply personal. You might be wondering: Will they really understand my lifestyle? Will I feel connected to my design team? Will the process feel overwhelming? Will something get lost in translation?

The truth is, distance has never been a barrier for us. It’s all possible because of our detailed design process, standards, and proven methods, ones we’ve tested, refined, and perfected over the years, allowing us to design homes remotely while preserving the human connection and personalized experience DKOR is known for.

What Happens First When You Design With Us Remotely

If you’re planning a new build, home refresh or a renovation and considering working with an interior designer remotely, your first question is usually simple: Where do we begin?

The answer is simple. We follow the exact same design process for our remote projects as we do for our local ones. Every phase is intentional. The team addresses every detail and skips nothing.

The only difference is how we adapt certain touchpoints to work seamlessly at a distance, without compromising the experience we aim to deliver to every client. From communication and presentations to approvals and collaboration, the process is thoughtfully adjusted so you receive the same level of care, clarity, and personalization as our local clients.

THE INITIAL CALL

Before we officially begin the process, we start with a conversation. By the time you reach out, you’ve likely spent some time getting to know our work, our style, and how we approach design, and if you haven’t, don’t worry at all. We’ll walk you through everything. This call is our opportunity to get to know you.

We talk through your ideas, your lifestyle, and the specific needs of the project you have in mind, making sure we fully understand how we can best help you design and execute your project.

During this initial conversation, we also walk you through how we work and make sure our process aligns with what you’re expecting. We discuss our design approach, timelines, communication style, and fees, so everything is clear from the very beginning. Transparency from the start is key to a successful partnership.

With that information, we prepare a detailed proposal along with an initial overall budget for your project. If everything feels aligned and you’re comfortable moving forward, we officially begin working together, and become your partners in this design journey.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

1. SETTING UP THE PROJECT

Once you sign with us, we get everything set up and introduce you to your design team. This is when you’ll meet the interior designers who will be working closely with you to create the spaces you’ve been dreaming about.

You’ll also have a project manager on your team. Their job is to keep things organized, making sure the project stays on track, the budget makes sense, and all the moving pieces are coordinated. This way, you don’t have to worry about juggling details or chasing answers.

Together, your designers and project manager will work with you to define the project budget in more detail. We’ll help break it down by areas of the home and talk through where it makes sense to invest more and where you can be more flexible, always based on what matters most to you.

By the end of this step, we clearly define the big topics, including the budget, scope, and timeline. With that clarity in place, we’re ready to move into the fun part of the process: designing your home.

2. STYLE MEETING

This is where the fun really begins. These are your first official design meetings with us, and the moment we start translating our initial conversations into a clear design direction for your home.

We begin with what we call a style meeting. During this meeting, our interior design team takes the time to really get to know you. We talk through your expectations, your needs, and what you want your home to feel like, not just how you want it to look. This helps us understand your vision and the type of design solutions your project will require.

In this first meeting, we focus on two main things: your style and your needs. We review any inspiration images you’ve gathered, discuss what you love (and what you don’t), and talk through how you plan to live in your space.

If you’re working with other collaborators, such as an architect, builder, or consultant, we review how everyone fits into the process. And if you don’t have that team in place yet, we’re happy to help guide you in the right direction.

For remote projects, we plan an initial visit whenever possible, so we can spend some face-to-face time with you, see the space, review existing conditions, and take any necessary measurements. The goal is to fully understand your vision and your home so we can move forward with confidence and clarity.

3. CONCEPT PRESENTATION

After the style meeting, which gives us the clarity we need to shape your concept and ensure the design feels personal, intentional, and aligned with how you live, we create a detailed concept presentation. In this presentation, we show you how we can bring your ideas to life, defining materials, colors, and details that will guide the design of each area.

We typically present this virtually, so you can see the design come to life from wherever you are. You’ll be able to review every detail, share your feedback, and collaborate with your design team in real time, making sure the concept truly reflects your style and vision before we move forward.

4. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Once the concept is clear, our talented team begins designing each space of your home. From space planning to material selections, we create realistic renderings, sketches, and sample presentations so you can truly visualize your project coming to life. You’ll have the opportunity to review and approve every detail along the way, ensuring nothing is left to chance and everything meets your expectations.

For remote projects, we set up virtual meetings to walk you through the design of each area. To help you experience the materials firsthand, we send you a package with samples of everything we’re considering. This way, you can see and feel the textures, colors, and finishes in real time, just as if you were in the studio with us.

5. PLANNING AND SPECIFICATIONS

The execution of the design is just as important as the design itself. Once you’ve approved the design and all selections for your home, we move into the implementation phase.

During this stage, we develop detailed plans and specifications, from construction documents to complete design packages, that guide the construction process. These documents help prevent costly mistakes, avoid misunderstandings, and ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible. They also provide clear direction to architects, builders, and all other collaborators involved in your project.

These deliverables are primarily created for the professionals executing the work. Unlike the design presentations, which you review and approve, the technical documentation does not require your direct involvement, that’s part of why you hire us. Our team handles the technical details and coordinates directly with each vendor and collaborator.

That said, you’re never left out of the loop. You’ll be included in key communications, and your project manager will keep you updated on progress, deliverables, and timelines, so you always know exactly where things stand.

At this stage, there’s no real difference between working locally or remotely. The structure, coordination, and level of detail remain exactly the same.

6. SELECTIONS

By this point, we’ve defined the first layers of your design, the materials, finishes, and key features for each room. Now it’s time to build on that foundation and bring warmth and personality into the space.

In this phase, we meet again to review the next layers of the design: furniture, lighting, window treatments, rugs, artwork, and accessories. These are the pieces that truly make your home feel complete.

For remote projects, we schedule detailed virtual presentations where we walk you through every selection. You’ll see how each item fits within the overall concept, how it works with the materials already approved, and how everything comes together as a cohesive design. We present furnishings in scale and within your floor plans, so you can clearly understand proportions and layout before anything is finalized.

Because we care about keeping you involved and providing the best possible experience, we send samples whenever needed, allowing you to see and feel the materials in your own space.

We know selecting furnishings remotely can feel like a big commitment, which is why nothing is ordered without your approval. We refine and adjust based on your feedback until everything feels right. Our role is to curate and narrow down options for you, so you’re never overwhelmed with endless choices. By the end of this stage, you’ll have a complete picture of your home.

7. STAGING AND FINAL REVEAL

And here comes the exciting part, getting everything ready for the big reveal! One of the most common questions we hear is: How do you handle staging if you’re not located here? The answer is simple: we travel to you.

Your design team visits your home to finalize every detail in person. During this time, we oversee subcontractors as they complete last-minute touch-ups, review installations, and ensure they execute everything exactly as planned.

We bring in all approved furnishings, accessories, artwork, and styling elements, carefully placing each piece to ensure the space feels complete. We also walk through the home room by room, adjusting and refining until everything feels just right. And then, we welcome you into your new home, just as you imagined, or even better, with everything ready for you to move in.

SITE VISITS

You might be wondering: how many site visits do we make, and how often? We schedule strategic site visits at key milestones of the project to review important phases in person. These visits allow us to verify progress, address details, and ensure the team executes everything according to plan.

The rest of the time, you still have our eyes on the project. We remain in constant communication with architects, builders, and all collaborators, monitoring progress and following up regularly to keep everything moving forward.

FULL PROJECT ADMIN

As we mentioned, when you work with our Florida interior design team remotely, you’re not only getting the design, you’re also getting full execution and project administration.

Procurement doesn’t happen all at once; it is carefully managed throughout the entire project. For remote projects, this becomes even more important. Once you approve the selections, our team orders, tracks, and coordinates every item. From custom furniture and lighting to materials and accessories, we manage vendor communications, confirm specifications, review lead times, and oversee deliveries.

Our project administration team also coordinates shipping and logistics, and we travel for furniture delivery days to ensure everything arrives as expected and in the right condition. If an item arrives damaged or incorrect, we handle the claims and returns, so you don’t have to.
