In high-end interior design, the use of unique material palettes is key to creating residential projects that stand out and make an impact on the look and feel of a space. If you’re familiar with our interior design process, you know that we select materials early in the design phase, even before selecting furniture and accessories. Materials form the foundational layer that shapes the rest of the design, giving the home or space its structure and personality.

That’s why material selection is so important to interior designers. It’s not just about picking materials that look good together, but also about the creativity involved in combining them in a way that is both unique and timeless.

Materials and Finishes in High-End Interior Design

By pairing different materials and finishes in the most creative ways, we create interiors that feel fresh yet impactful. This doesn’t mean we need to use a lot of materials; rather, it’s about making strategic choices that come together in a way that feels completely new and unexpected, giving the project its heart and soul.

In this article, we share with you some of our favorite high-end interior designs in Miami and throughout Florida in which the spotlight is on materiality and the creativity behind its selection.

Our interior designers carefully curate each space, resulting in designs loved by our clients that also capture attention in our portfolio because of their unique blend of functionality, aesthetic appeal, and timeless elegance.

LESS IS MORE

Miami high-end interior design in a luxury home by DKOR Interiors

In this waterfront home in Florida, our high-end interior design focuses on neutral materials that are simple yet rich, creating a clean aesthetic with an emphasis on basic vertical and horizontal elements.

Inspired by the De Stijl movement, the use of geometric shapes and primary colors along with black and white, we’ve integrated this approach throughout the space. The open-concept living and dining areas flow seamlessly, just as our design plan does. A striking focal point in the living room is the twenty feet six inch tall fireplace, where we installed slabs of gray quartzite in a gridlike pattern, turning the fireplace itself into a De Stijl-inspired work of art.

THE ADVANTAGE OF USING THE SAME MATERIALS IN DIFFERENT WAYS

Este Zen Contemporary Miami Residence is one of our favorite high-end residential design projects whose goal was to create a serene space. The selection of material was a key factor in achieving that look and feel.

Instead of using many different materials in the common areas of the home, and following the principles of a serene environment characterized by simplicity and calm, we focused on a few key materials that were used strategically. This approach allowed us to craft a cohesive atmosphere in which each material complements another, enhancing the feeling of tranquility throughout the space.

Below you can see how we combined the same materials differently in both the living and dining room.

WARMTH IN THE FOURTH WALL

Contemporary high-end interior design by the best local interior designers in Miami, FL

Thinking outside the box in high-end interior design means maximizing every surface to which materials can be applied. The truth is, the ceiling offers countless opportunities to make a bold decorative statement, yet it’s often overlooked.

These wooden ceiling design ideas at our Elegancia contemporánea frente al mar project illustrate how wood—one of the most versatile and timeless materials—can infuse a space with warmth and natural beauty.

Our residential designers in Fort Lauderdale went beyond simply covering the ceiling with wood; they incorporated a slatted design that not only adds visual interest but also enhances the airy look of the space, helping to define distinct areas with elegance.

THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF EACH MATERIAL

In some designs, a bit of creativity can lead to the use of more than two or three finishes in a single space. The key is not the quantity, but in using the right amount of each material, ensuring that they complement, rather than compete with, one another. When done thoughtfully, these finishes work together to create a harmonious and balanced high-end interior design.

Take a look at how we combined stone, wood, accent marble, glass, and metal accents in this living room accent wall for a condo in Miami. The result is stunning and truly unique!
