When designing shared bedrooms, we focus on thoughtful space planning to ensure the room still feels open and comfortable. As interior designers, we also recommend incorporating a variety of seating options, from sectional sofas to casual lounge chairs, to make sure that everyone has a comfortable spot, whether you’re hosting extended family or enjoying a quiet evening with just a few guests.

Many of the vacation homes we’ve had the privilege to design are deeply connected to the natural environment around them. Whether located on the beach, in a mountain cabin, or even in a desert landscape (yes, we designed one in Nevada!). The essence of a vacation home is to immerse you in its surroundings, helping you disconnect from daily life and reconnect with the place itself.

Creating a smooth indoor-outdoor flow is key in any great vacation home. It’s not just about how things look, it’s also about making the space feel open, connected, and easy to enjoy. We think about how you move through the home, what you see from each angle, and how materials can help everything feel like one big, welcoming space. Our goal is to make the transition from inside to outside feel natural, like the outdoors is just another part of your home.

To help the indoors flow naturally into the outdoors, we love using features like big sliding or folding glass doors, flooring that continues outside, and ceilings that line up from inside to out. For indoor-outdoor flow, we also make sure to highlight the best views and create outdoor areas, like covered terraces, balconies, or dining spaces, that feel like a true extension of your home, not just an afterthought.

Things like sunlight, shade, breeze, and how the home sits on the land all matter when we design these outdoors spaces. Whether you’re enjoying a morning coffee overlooking the ocean or gathering around a firepit under the stars, indoor-outdoor flow brings the vacation experience to life.

KITCHEN AS LIVING SPACE

When it comes to vacation homes, we approach kitchen design a little differently. Rather than opting for a closed-off layout or something overly formal, we love creating kitchens that feel like a true living space, a place where everyone can gather, not just the one doing the cooking.

In many families, the kitchen naturally becomes the hub of the home. We embrace that energy by designing integrated kitchen-dining areas that encourage connection and flow. In fact, one kitchen trend we’ve incorporated is attaching the dining table directly to the island, bringing the entire space together in a seamless and functional way.

We also love incorporating large islands with barstools, giving everyone a place to hang out, have a snack, chat, or even lend a hand with prep.

An open-plan layout is key to making the kitchen feel both social and inviting. We aim to create a strong connection between the cooking and eating areas, blending functionality with comfort so it becomes a natural family hangout spot. Whether it’s morning coffee, a casual lunch, or cooking dinner together after a day at the beach, these kitchens are designed to bring people together.

KID-FRIENDLY ZONES

When a vacation home includes little ones, whether they’re part of the family or friends coming to visit, creating spaces just for them makes a big difference. Vacation time means freedom, play, and exploration… and we all know that keeping kids entertained (and safe) is part of the experience.

That’s why we love to incorporate dedicated kid-friendly areas into our vacation home designs. This could be a full game room, or simply a cozy corner in a shared family space, with a low lounge area, soft rugs, and accessible storage for toys, books, and crafts. The goal is to make kids feel welcome and included, without compromising on the overall aesthetic of the home.

We also prioritize durable, easy-to-clean materials that can stand up to playtime while still looking great. Whether it’s building forts, doing puzzles, or winding down with a movie, these spaces give kids their own zone to enjoy, while the grown-ups get to relax, too.

FLEXIBLE SPACES

Flexibility is key in a vacation home! One of the best ways to make a space truly family-friendly is to include a room that can adapt to different situations and meet a variety of needs, a space that shifts depending on what the moment calls for.
